Diplomats from the United States and North Korea met Saturday at a remote island resort near Stockholm, Sweden — but after a full day of talks, they couldn’t even agree on how their meeting had gone.

“The negotiations have not fulfilled our expectation and finally broke off,” the North’s chief nuclear negotiator told reporters through an interpreter outside the country’s embassy in Stockholm, Reuters reported.

But the State Department said the North Koreans’ “early comments…do not reflect the content or the spirit of today’s 8.5-hour discussion.”

The powwow had raised hopes the sides could make progress on nukes after discussions went nowhere in February.

“There remains to be a lot of work that will have to be done,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo cautioned earlier Saturday.

President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed in June 2018 on a long-term goal of denuclearizing the entire Korean peninsula.

American negotiators accepted Sweden’s invitation to return in two weeks for further talks.
