The southern city has been under fierce bombardment for weeks and has been a key target for Russia since the war in Ukraine began almost two months ago. Mr Kadyrov, the head of the Russian republic of Chechnya, has said Mariupol will fall today. He said: “Before lunchtime, or after lunch, Azovstal will be completely under the control of the forces of the Russian Federation.” The Azovstal steelworks is the last stronghold, where around 1,000 civilians are sheltering from shelling and missile attacks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said last night that: “There can be no peace without justice.” Should Mariupol fall it would be a coup for the Kremlin and Russia’s biggest victory yet.
