Cold weather, snow, hail and ice are on the cards for Wednesday’s weather, with warnings in place across much of the UK. Forecasters warn weather will stay cold and remain wintry at times, particularly for the North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Frank Saunders said: “However later on Tuesday and early Wednesday, don’t be surprised to see some snow falling even in Wales and the south, although again most of any lying snow will be over hills.”

Showers in the south will often be accompanied by strong winds, while there is a risk of overnight ice across the north and west especially tonight and Tuesday nights.

Later in the week, the weather could turn more generally wet again.

Some areas have already seen snow, with photographs showing heavy snow across roads, fields and roofs in Northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

There is a Met Office yellow weather warning for snow and ice spanning much of the UK on Tuesday and into Wednesday.

The warning lasts until 10am on Wednesday and states wintry showers and icy patches could bring travel disruption.

The areas under the warning are Central, Tayside and Fife, East Midlands, Highlands and Eilean Siar, North East England, North West England, Northern Ireland, Orkney and Shetland, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, Strathclyde, Wales, West Midlands and Yorkshire and Humber.

The Met Office warns wintry showers are expected to continue into Wednesday morning, creating icy surfaces.

A mixture of rain, hail, and snow will fall at times – mostly over high ground.

Some areas could one to three centimetres of snow, mostly those above 200m.

Elsewhere four to eight centimetres is possible over higher ground in Northwest England, Wales and West Scotland.

The Met Office warns to expect

• Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
• Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
• Some roads and railways may be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services

A further warning for ice is in place from midnight on Wednesday until 10am the same day.

This states icy stretches could cause travel disruption during Wednesday morning rush hour and includes London.

The warning is for East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England, North West England, South West England, Wales and West Midlands.

The forecast predicts a mix of rain and hail showers, with some snow falling over higher ground, is likely to leave surfaces wet overnight.

Surface temperatures are then expected to fall below freezing with icy stretches forming in places.

Tuesday evening and night

Cold with clear spells and wintry showers.

Showers will be heavy at times and most frequent in the west with some lying snow over the high ground here.

Icy patches are likely for many from earlier showers. Windy, especially in the southwestern UK.

Wednesday

Another cold, breezy and fairly unsettled day with sunny spells and wintry showers.

Heaviest and most frequent showers in the northwest whilst some southern parts seeing fewer showers than Tuesday.
