UK weather: Sun sweeps rain from skies as Brits prepare for days of snow

It's a wet start for many across the country this morning, but it won't last for long.

After a misty morning, showers will dog Northern Ireland and Scotland, especially in western regions.

Downpours will then move southwards across England and Wales, but will become patchy as conditions improve.

The afternoon will bring sunshine to Scotland as most of England will see clear spells and a dry night.

But clouds and drizzle will remain in Wales, Northern Ireland and the south-west of England.

Wet conditions in those areas are expected to remain throughout the night as we head into Tuesday.

Tomorrow will be mostly dry and sunny, but there is a chance of rain in northern and western regions.

Wednesday is expected to bring cloudy weather across the south and patchy drizzle.

There will also be showers in northern regions and the possibility of snow in the Highlands of Scotland.

It comes as 11 days of snow have been forecast to start on Thursday.

The  Met Office  is forecasting lower than average temperatures for this time of year, but the Scottish Highlands are expected to take the biggest hit with snow flurries hitting every day until December 13.

Parts of eastern Wales, the Midlands and the north of England will also need their scarves by the end of the week with temperatures of 2C or 3C commonplace.

Temperatures will average just 3C or 4C every day and by the end of the week they will drop to as low as 0C in central Scotland.

Brits will need to wrap up warm elsewhere on Friday, December 5 too, with the mercury hitting lows of 2C in eastern parts of Wales, 3C in the Midlands and 2C-3C in the north of England.

Sunday, December 7, will be a grey and misty day for most places in the UK, although north-eastern Scotland could see some sunny spells.
