UK weather: Homes evacuated after severe flooding strikes as Met Office issues new warning

Nearly a month’s worth of rain fell over large parts of Greater Manchester and Cheshire yesterday, causing severe flooding across the region. A major incident was declared in Poynton, Cheshire with homes evacuated and families were forced to spend the night in emergency accommodation. The deluge of downpours is set to continue, with the Met Office issuing a fresh danger to life flooding warning this morning.

Flooding has affected transport links due to road closures and disruption to railway lines.

All railway lines between Manchester Airport and Wilmslow have been affected by the adverse weather conditions, according to train operator Northern.

Main roads in the area have also been affected, with the A555 airport link shut due to flooding.

The M60 and Princess Parkway in south Manchester is also experiencing lane closures and delays due to large pools of water on the road.

Manchester Airport said passengers were using alternative routes and had not been delayed.

Police have urged people not to ignore “road closed” signs by driving or walking through water.

Poynton Police said on Twitter: “Please do not ignore the road closed signs or attempt to drive or walk through the water.

“Your car could become submerged and the road underneath could have collapsed putting you in danger. We put them in place to keep you safe.”

Poynton Fire Station said its crews had been to more than 20 incidents, including rescuing at least 11 people from flood water in the area over a four-hour stretch.

Eleven people and four dogs were rescued from rising water in Bramhall, Stockport, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said.

Neil Griffiths, from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, said flood waters were beginning to recede on Thursday night.
