UK weather forecast: Thunderstorms to strike as 48-hour downpour puts UK on flood alert
Britain has been battered by heavy rainfall this month, with some of the country already having been hit by the whole of its average October rainfall. But, heavy rain and strong winds are expected to continue with the UK bracing for a 48-hour period of turbulent weather gripping Britain. Clare Nasir, a meteorologist for the Met Office, warned a low-pressure system would strike the UK, trigging longer periods of rainfall in the coming days.
Nasir said: “One or two showers to start Thursday morning. Then we watch this area of cloud and rain, across the Channel Isles moves up towards central southern England throughout the morning bringing with it some moderate rain as we go through morning rush hour tomorrow.
“So some surface water issues across this zone here moving towards East Anglia, as well as the southeast.
“Elsewhere a rash of showers moves in across Northern Ireland, western Scotland, Wales, the west country and northern England. All in all that really sets the scene for the next 48-hours or so.”
Nasir added: “Through Thursday evening, those showers continue. They will merge to form a longer spell of rain from time to time and with that, they could be heavy in places.
“But, low-pressure in change over the next few days and the first part of the weekend. Stronger winds at times, we see this gusty swirls of showers moving across the centre of the low.
“The weather stays unstable and unsettled through Saturday, showers tending to last longer.”
BBC Weather claimed the UK would see a “dry and clear” night ahead for many on Wednesday, with a potential chilly start for some.
They tweeted: “A largely dry and clear night ahead for many with some patchy fog or mist forming.
“Chilly, especially for Scotland, with a touch of frost possible. However, there may be some isolated showers for the west.”
The BBC Weather forecast from Wednesday, October 16, to Sunday, October 20, warned of a potential flood risk, as the rain and thunderstorms sweep Britain.
The BBC Weather outlook reads: “Thursday and Friday then look to be showery and cool as low-pressure approaches from the Atlantic.

“The showers are likely to be most frequent and heavy over southern and western areas of England together with Wales where one or two thunderstorms could be mixed-in.
“The showers could be heavy enough to cause some local surface flooding. Further north and east across the country, there will also be showers but with some sunshine at times as well.
“On Friday, southern counties of England will also have the threat of some strong and gusty south-westerly winds.”
Looking towards the weekend, the BBC Weather claimed the “showery weather is likely to persist”.
The forecast added: “Again, some of the showers could be heavy and thundery, particularly near to southern and western coasts of England and Wales.
“There should also be sunshine at times. It is likely to be rather cool, perhaps turning chilly in the north on Sunday night.”
There are currently 38 flood alerts in place for the UK with six flood warnings, requiring immediate action.
Leading bookmakers have slashed odds on the UK to be pummelled by snowfall before the month is out, to just 3-1, down from 8-1.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “After a miserable, wet and windy start to October, it looks as though temperatures will take yet another turn for the worse with snow potentially on the way in the next two weeks.”
