UK weather forecast: Heavy snow blankets UK as mercury plummets to -11C

BBC Weather: Freezing temperatures and snow to hit UK

Overnight temperatures sunk to the coldest of winter so far, with Met Office forecasters recording below -10C across three areas of the UK. Tulloch Bridge in Scotland recorded -11.6C on Friday night, Katesbridge in Northern Ireland saw temperatures sink to -10.2C and Redesdale Camp in Newcastle saw the mercury hit -11.1C.

Ice warnings are in place across the UK today, with yet more snow due to fall in some areas.

Elsewhere low cloud and dense fog have been seen, with drivers urged to be careful as snow, ice and fog could lead to treacherous conditions.

Ben Aldous, of the RAC, said: “Fog, ice and in some places snow are the enemies of drivers.

“In order to avoid falling foul of the conditions, it’s important for motorists to adjust their driving style to suit the conditions.

“Being gentler on the throttle and brakes, and slowing down particularly on rural or ungritted routes can help ensure a safe and trouble-free journey.”

He also asked drivers to check their tyres have plenty of tread and are properly inflated and windscreens are “completely cleared of ice and snow” before travelling.

Conditions on Saturday will be mostly dry say forecasters, with a few showers near to the coasts.

However Netweather forecasters warn after a cold start to Saturday morning, temperatures will struggle into the low single figures for many.

Overnight fog patches will linger in central and southern regions and it could well stay below zero all day.

Scotland and to a lesser extent Northern Ireland will have a more cloudy picture with some outbreaks of rain and sleet with snow over the hills moving down from the northwest as those westerlies start to arrive.

Netweather forecasters warn: “With that rain, sleet and hill snow, there’ll also be more cloud, which will be moving south into the north of England later in the day with some outbreaks of rain following it into the evening and overnight.

“That cloud and patchy rain will continue sinking south too, but further south, with skies still clearer, another frost is likely, as it is for the north of Scotland behind the main band of cloud.”

Snow-covered parts of Scotland and the North of England on Friday, with heavy snowfall seen in West Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland.

Pictures showed the extent of snowfall, with more on the way this weekend.

Snow could be seen over the Pennines, North York Moors and the high ground of Wales on Saturday.

The Met Office also said parts of southwest England could see 2 to 5cm of snow.

Currently, there are Met Office ice warnings in place across much of the country.

The Met Office warns: “Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow will clear southwards during the early hours of Saturday, but some showers will affect coastal districts.

“Where skies clear, icy stretches are likely to form on untreated surfaces.”

The warnings are in place until 11am today and are for the East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England, North East England, North West England, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, South West England, Wales, West Midlands and Yorkshire and Humber.
