UK weather forecast: Floods to drown the nation as Hurricane Humberto strikes Britain
A dramatic change in the weather will see sunshine and blue skies give way to persistent downpours, hail, thunder and strong winds. A cold front set to sweep the country at the end of the week will see temperatures plunge in the run-up to October, forecasters warn.
The foul weather will be driven in part by the remains of Hurricane Humberto poised to clip the UK over the next couple of days.
A Met Office alert for rain warns torrential downpours across southern Britain could trigger flooding and travel mayhem.
Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall said: “This week is going to be very different compared to the weather so far this month with rain and some winds forecast on most days.
“The remains of ex-Hurricane Humberto are out to the west of the country caught up in a low-pressure system which moves closer to the UK on Tuesday which is expected to be the worst day of the week.
“We are expecting some hail and thunderstorms in with the rain and unsettled weather during the middle part of the week.
“Another low moves in on Wednesday and this will affect the weather through the end of the week and into the weekend.
“There is a warning out for rain on Tuesday, and parts of the country could see the average rainfall for the month fall by the end of the day.”
Temperatures will hover in the mid-20Cs in parts of the country through the start of the week before a cold front moves in on Thursday, he said.
This will bring a swathe of Polar air across Britain sending temperatures plunging by the weekend, he added.
He said: “It will still feel quite warm through the start of the week, with some warm nights ahead as the skies are cloudier compared to last week.
“Temperatures will return to normal for the time of year by the weekend when we have Polar Maritime air moving across the country.
“We are also likely to see further thundery outbreaks and hail in the north and the west into the weekend.

Britain’s weather will be given a shake-up by the remnants of Hurricane Humberto which last week unleashed havoc across Bermuda.
The storm has since fizzled out but warm air and energy associated with the cyclone will drift towards the UK through the next couple of days.
Britons have been warned to start wrapping up with cold winds and rain largely forecast through the rest of September.
Weather Action forecaster James Madden said: “The fine weather will be rapidly replaced by some unsettled weather conditions throughout the upcoming weeks.
“Low pressure will dominate proceedings and bring strong winds and heavy showers for many over the next few days.
“There will be some bright spells among the doom and glam, but these will come in between heavy showers so it will never be entirely settled.
“We will see a significant drop in temperatures through the end of September.”
