UK weather forecast: Britain braces for hottest May Bank Holiday in a century

Following a cooler couple of days after an atypically warm string of days, temperatures are set to go back up during the Bank holiday. After a wet and windy start to the bank holiday for much of the UK warmer temperatures are set to return.

On Monday, temperatures could reach highs of 26C in London.

Coastal areas are likely to experience highs of around 20C.

Western areas can expect continuous sunshine across all of Sunday and Monday.

In Eastern part of the country the sun will be seen in spells, rather than wall-to-wall sunshine, on Sunday and Monday.

According to the Met Office, many areas will still experience some scattered showers throughout the weekend.

On Sunday morning, many northern and central areas will experience cloudy skies which will then produce light spells of rain.

They are expected to fade and skies will begin to brighten.

Southern England and Northern Ireland are expected to be sunnier and experience warmer temperatures and less wind, the Met Office said.

Monday will be warm and mostly fine for southern regions, according to forecasters.

Rain in the far northwest will shift southeast into central regions on Tuesday with brighter drier weather conditions expected for the rest of the week.

But Britons are being urged to stay at home and continue social distancing, in spite of the warm weather.

Police chiefs have warned against becoming blasé about the lockdown due to the heat.

One chief constable told The Times: “I think people no longer understand what they can do – or think it is no longer important.”

Matt Hancock, the health secretary, pleaded with the public not to be reckless over the warm weekend.

Speaking at the Downing Street press conference, Matt Hancock said: “Let’s not go back to square one.

“We can all play our part in the national effort.”

On Twitter the Met office has been advising people to stay at home to save lives.

It stated: “The movement of the JetStream will play a big part in the weekend weather.

“As it moves north, high pressure will build, bringing sunny weather for many on Sunday and Monday.”

After pictures showed large gatherings of people at Southend in Essex earlier this week, the council’s leader said the lifting of lockdown measures has put the council in a “very difficult position”.

Councillor Ian Gilbert said on Friday: “For many weeks we ran a successful Don’t Visit Southend campaign, but the Government’s lifting of restrictions have put us in a very difficult position as day trips and sunbathing are allowed, and takeaways can be open for business.”

Councillor Carmen Appich, from Brighton & Hove City Council, has advised anyone planning to visit the city “to consider very carefully how their journey will impact on others.”

Hastings Borough Council has also issued a warning and said the area is “closed to visitors from outside the town.”
