UK weather forecast: 20ins of snow on the way as Britain set to be colder than ANTARCTICA – The Sun

BRITAIN will plunge to conditions colder than ANTARCTICA with freezing temperatures of -1C, weather forecasters have warned.

Storm Ciara is set to batter the country with winds of up to 80mph in the south this weekend while a blizzard sweeps over Scotland by Tuesday.

Meanwhile forecasters at Met Desk predict that temperatures could even drop as low as -5C.

The mercury plummeting means that Britain will be colder than the arctic – where an Argentinian research station logged temperatures of 18.3C.

Yellow weather warnings have been sent out for the entirety of the UK this weekend, with amber warnings in coastal areas.

Simon Partridge, Met Office meteorologist, said: “On Saturday much of the country will have a dry and bright day.

"But it will get increasingly windy as the day goes on.

“Rainy showers will be arriving in Scotland and Northern Ireland on late Saturday – heralding the arrival of Storm Ciara that will push in.

Through Sunday there are a number of warnings out with a yellow wind warning covering the entire UK.

“Through Sunday there are a number of warnings out with a yellow wind warning covering the entire UK.

“There will 50 and 60mph gusts with 70mph in coastal areas.

“There is also amber warning for Sunday from Portsmouth over to Kent as far north as the southern limit of the M25 around Hampshire and that’s for gusts of wind from 70 to 80mph, from morning to 8pm.

“There will also be rain warnings for Northern Ireland, Scotland, northern England and Wales.

“It’s going to be quite mild on Sunday, although it won’t feel mild, when we get the main part of Ciara across the UK we could see temperatures of 14-15c.”

While Brits brace themselves for wet and windy conditions on the weekend, Monday and Tuesday could see a blizzard engulf parts of Scotland.

He added: “As we get into Monday and Tuesday, it’s going to hold temperatures near-to-freezing which is going to allow snow in the northern parts of the UK.

“The strength of the wind on Monday and Tuesday will prevent it from being that cold but we will see showers, which will provide blizzard-like conditions for parts of Scotland.

“There will be disruptive weather for Scotland and Northern Ireland.”
