Flash flood warnings have been issued all over the UK today as torrential downpours of rain look set to cause havoc.

The government's flooding forecast has said that land and roads are set to be submerged and there "will be travel disruption".

Four separate flood warnings and 23 flood alerts are currently in force in England and Wales, with one in six properties in England at risk of flooding from rivers, sea and surface waters according to The Flood Hub.

Two flood warnings have been issued for Lower Stour, on the south coast near Bournemouth, one in Keswick in the Lake District and another in Tenby in Wales.

Other areas are at serious risk too, according to the government's flooding forecast, with river flooding "expected in York following recent heavy rainfall".

The north-west of England, north Wales and coastal areas are also at risk as the week progresses, and areas close to the M4 motorway, near to the Severn Bridge, could be badly hit too.

This comes as yesterday's showers are expected to continue today and for much of the rest of the week, according to the Met Office.

Showers are expected to batter northern Scotland and Northern Ireland this morning, as well as much of Wales and south-west England.

Inland, however, the picture is slighter more rosy.

"Central and southern England not doing too badly at all with some sunshine, and sunshine elsewhere throughout the day in north-west England, the central belt of Scotland, southern Scotland," explained Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasir.

"Showery rain just continues to slip down across Lincolnshire as well as East Anglia, more cloud for the Midlands for a time and we could see a few showers further south."

Temperatures are set to be highest in southern and south-west England, hovering around 11C to 12C today, with the Midlands, northern England and Northern Ireland expected to be one or two notches cooler.

Northern regions of Scotland could stay as low as 7C.
