UK weather: Downpour batters Britain with rain coming in ‘waves’ and leaving people strand
Scotland was the area hit the most by the torrential downpours, which severely disrupted transports and devastated buildings. One man was spotted and filmed by a social media user sitting on the roof of his car in Corstorphine, a small village west of Edinburgh, with his vehicle appearing unable to move through the flooded streets. And others were seen in across Scotland, with one witness shocked at the “sea” of water hitting Edinburgh.
Peter O’Brien, 53, described the scenes he saw while heading to Edinburgh Retail Park in a tram today: “It was as if I was looking at a sea. There were cars stranded everywhere and people coming out of their cars.
“I think the batteries must have got wet. The tram also had to get stopped and we were all told to get out.
“Some of the buses heading to that direction also got cancelled too.
“It was all just crazy. I was going to B&Q to get some materials but the shop got shut down because the water had got in and caused a power cut.
“And even though I wanted to go home, I had to go to a garage store room and wait. Luckily the guys there were really friendly.”
Christine Jardine, Liberal Democrats MP for Edinburgh West, filmed a river of water violently hitting the glass doors of her office on St John’s Road.
She can be heard saying in a video shared on social media: “Our office is right at the foot of Clermiston Road and it came down in waves to meet with the water that was already standing on St John’s Road.
“Every time a car went past it sent more waves towards our windows. Within minutes it was four inches deep.
“I actually took the mattress off a sofabed we have in the office here just to block the door and keep the water out and we turned off all the electricity as a precaution.
“I’d say the whole thing lasted half an hour before the water was away again but it just shows how quickly these things can happen.
“There will be a lot of people could quite easily be coming home tonight to find their homes have been flooded.”
The MP also urged anyone in needs of help to get in touch with her office.
And the ceiling of a Farmfoods store in Leven, Fife, was partially destroyed.
The bad weather is to dominate over the country on Tuesday as well, as the rain move down towards the west and southeast coast.
The Met Office has issued two yellow warnings, one for rain in the Manchester and Liverpool areas lasting until 12pm and another for thunderstorms in the southeastern part of the country, lasting until 10am.
The office warned of the risk of flooding, saying it could lead to road chaos, damage building and even harm people.
The warning reads: “There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.”
But the weather is preparing to take another radical turn on Wednesday, the Met Office warned, telling Britons to prepare for increasingly hot and humid weather.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Dan Suri, said: “It’s going to get hot and humid for some from Wednesday, with the highest temperatures expected across southern and western parts of the UK.
“Not everywhere will see the high temperatures, however, as an easterly breeze will keep North Sea coasts much cooler.
“By the time we get to Saturday, however, North Sea coasts will join much of the rest of eastern UK in seeing temperatures of 27 to 32C.
“Heatwave thresholds will, therefore, be met across some parts of the UK later this week and into the weekend.
“It’ll feel very muggy for many this week, especially overnight as temperatures are likely to stay in the high teens and possibly low 20s Celsius in urban areas.”
