UK storm map: Second storm to pummel Britain with 100mph winds – Storm Dennis latest

The Met Office has warned of blizzards and up to eight inches of snow hitting parts of the UK following Storm Ciara which battered Britain over the weekend. The effects of Ciara are still being felt as the life-endangering rain and wind will give way to hazardous levels of snow and ice across the country. But when is Storm Dennis due to hit and how bad could it be?

Storm Ciara has been dubbed as potentially the “Storm of the Century” after it ripped across Britain over the weekend, unleashing terrifying winds of up to 97mph in some regions.

Some areas of the UK saw a month and a half’s worth of rainfall in just 24 hours as a result of Storm Ciara.

About 500,000 homes were left without power during the worst of the storm, with around 20,000 still left without power on Monday.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said: “While Storm Ciara is clearing away, that doesn’t mean we’re entering a quieter period of weather. It’s going to stay very unsettled.

“We have got colder air coming through the UK and will be feeling a real drop in temperatures, with an increased risk of snow in northern parts of the UK and likely in Scotland.

“There could be up to 20cm on Monday and Tuesday and with strong winds, blizzards aren’t out of the question.”

  • Met Office warnings: Snow to batter Britain as Storm Dennis looms

Following the storm, the Met Office has warned about the aftermath of the storm, issuing a series of weather warnings for the coming days.

The first yellow weather warning for wind and snow currently in effect began Monday at midnight and continues until 11.59pm on Tuesday.

The warning, which covers Scotland and Northern Ireland, advises that heavy snow and strong winds will combine to lead to disruption to travel, especially over higher routes.

The second weather warning for snow and ice covers the North East of England and is in effect until 11.59pm on Tuesday.

The third yellow weather warning from the Met Office is for snow and ice and is in force across Scotland from midnight to 12pm on Wednesday.

The Met Office warns the region could see snow showers and icy stretches which may lead to further disruption on Wednesday morning.

There is also a snow and ice warning in effect for Northern Ireland and the North East of England from midnight to 12pm on Wednesday.

The warning advises that further snow showers and icy surfaces may lead to travel disruption.

Although there are no other warnings for later this week, weather forecasters have said that another storm could be on the horizon: Storm Dennis.

Storm Dennis is currently trending on Twitter, however, it has yet to be named by the Met Office.

Met Office meteorologist Bonnie Diamond said: “Storm Ciara has cleared but it is still windy.

“There is the risk of snow and ice depending on where you are.

“There is very much hazardous weather still around.”

The Met Office forecast for Friday through the weekend reads: “Dry, cold start on Friday before wind and rain crosses most parts.

“Very windy, wet conditions developing later Saturday. Turning milder.

“At the beginning of this period, unsettled conditions are expected to dominate, often giving strong winds with spells of rain at times, interspersed with brighter, showery interludes.

“The heaviest rain and strongest winds are expected in the west and northwest of the UK with the best of any drier, brighter conditions in the south and southeast.

“In particular a very windy, wet spell of weather looks increasingly likely this weekend giving widespread gales.”

Predictions indicate that wind gusts could reach up to 60mph across the UK.

The weather system is forecast to barrel off the Atlantic next weekend, with Saturday night into Sunday seeing the worst of the weather.

Storm Dennis is according to some weather forecast maps, likely to bring intense snowstorms, strong winds and heavy rain this coming weekend.

With De4nnis on the approach, Ladbrokes slashed odds on the UK seeing wind speeds reach 100mph this week.

With a monster storm now set to batter Britain with blizzards and gales, the bookies have cut odds from 5/1 to just 5/4 on wind speeds hitting 100mph before the week is out.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “It looks as though we could be battered with 100mph winds in the next few days with the odds continuing to tumble.”
