A snow storm sparked chaos across the UK today (Monday, December 12) after the country was blanketed yesterday evening – but Brits ought to be bracing for more of the white stuff.

Weather maps have revealed that we're in for a 400 mile-wide blizzard in just a few days, with snow coming down in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

According to snow-forecast.com, there will be smatterings of snow in Northern Ireland, Scotland and the north of England over the coming days, leading up to Sunday (December 18) when we'll all get some.

Their maps show that at 6am on Sunday, pretty much all of Wales will be engulfed in the blizzard before it drifts north-easterly throughout the day.

By noon up to 5cm will be coming down in Northern Ireland. In England, the deluge will span from Manchester and Liverpool right down to London, covering all of the Midlands too.

The map shows that by 3pm some parts of Northern Ireland will have seen more than 5cm settle on the ground.

The snow will turn to rain for much of southern-central England and Wales in the afternoon (shown in grey), but by 3pm East Anglia, the east coast and Scotland – including Glasgow and Edinburgh – will be getting their dumping, according to snow-forecast.com.

The weather front is set to move away to the north-east as Sunday progresses, with Aberdeenshire being the last area to get some.

It awaits to be seen how low temperatures will drop this weekend, with last night having been the coldest night of the year so far. The mercury reached as low as -15.7C in Scotland.

As the snow turned to ice the Met Office issued yellow-level warnings regarding treacherous surfaces for both Northern Ireland and the south-east of England.

Another yellow-level warning for snow and ice is in place from tomorrow, covering the north of Scotland and the north-east coast of England. It is expected to be in place until Thursday.

The Met Office forecast for tomorrow reads: "Continuing cold, with frost and fog lingering in places. Otherwise fine, but further wintry showers near exposed coasts, later perhaps into the far southwest. Snow most persistent across northern Scotland."

They add for Wednesday to Friday: "Staying cold, but often bright, though frost and fog overnight proving slow to clear in places. Increasing threat of outbreaks of rain or snow by the end of the week."
