Pummelling rain is set to sweep across the nation over the course of the weekend, with the Met Office issuing urgent amber warnings for Saturday. The weather warnings apply to the southwest of the UK and Wales, as well as southwest and central Scotland.

In areas including Plymouth, Cardiff and Bath heavy rain could lead to “some flooding and disruption in places” this morning, according to the Met Office.

The initial amber warning in southwest England and Wales is due to come to an end at around 9:00am, but some rain may still continue.

In Scotland, Glasgow, Lanark, Ayr and parts of Greenock will see “heavy and disruptive rain”.

This is anticipated to spread throughout central Scotland until around noon.

The Met Office warned: “Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely.”

Bus and train services will probably be affected with journey times taking longer.

Spray and flooding on roads will also make journey times longer so motorists should drive with caution.

Kevin Pratt, an insurance expert at Forbes Advisor, has warned those living in areas where flood warnings are in place to prepare.

He said: “If an official flood warning is issued for your area, there are a number of steps you can take.”

These include moving your car to higher ground, charging your phone and laptop, checking on vulnerable loved ones in the area and preparing to move upstairs or elsewhere if your safety is threatened.

Mr Pratt also advises Britons to look out for their pets and “take their needs into account”.

If floods do force you to move, Mr Pratt says homeowners should “assemble a survival kit with food, water, medicines, blankets, torch, radio, move valuables upstairs if you can manage to do so and draw up a list of important phone numbers, including your insurance company.”

The rain makes up a deluge of autumn showers sweeping North Western Europe over the weekend.

Throughout the day, the Met Office urges Britons to brace for rain which may be “heavy at times”.

Downpours are expected to slowly clear away eastwards over parts of England, Scotland and Wales.

As the day progresses there is the chance of “sunny spells to follow”.

However, the Met Office states the south and west could be hit with further “heavy showers”.

Strong winds are set to batter the country throughout the morning.

The evening is set to be “chilly with clear spells”.

However, the rain will not hold off for long.

Wet and windy weather is set to make an appearance once again, with heavy rain and coastal gales blowing westwards.

Western, southern and central UK are set to take a beating from the weather during the early hours.

As Sunday morning approaches, early rain is expected to clear away to the East.

“Sunny spells and showers” will follow into the south, whilst further north rain returns later on.

The Met Office also warns of a windy Sunday afternoon.
