UK hot weather weekend forecast: Sod’s law as weekend set for RAIN after sizzling heatwave
The Met Office has warned extreme temperatures this week will end in rain, as the agency released a chain of weather advisories for the UK. Britain is in the midst of its second heatwave in one month, as a plume of heat tears its way across the country. The blistering heatwave is bleeding over from continental Europe and will push temperatures up to 38C by Thursday. Afterwards, however, is a period of equally intense rainfall.
Met Office forecasters explained after Thursday temperatures will once again begin to plummet.
The heatwave will break on Friday as the temperature falls by 13C in the space of 24 hours.
Storms will then roll in which are tipped to continue overnight and throughout the weekend, mainly in the north of the country.
Forecasters warned about an inch of rain could fall, causing potential travel disruption.
In their latest advisory, the Met Office warned storms could be “locally intense”.
They said: “Following a hot day (in places exceptionally so), scattered thunderstorms are likely to break out from late afternoon onwards.
“While some areas, particularly in the south of the warning area may well avoid the storms, where they do occur they could produce 20 to 30 mm of rain in less than an hour, along with frequent lightning, hail and gusty winds.
“Perhaps the main focus will be later in the evening and into the first part of the night across northern England and southern and eastern parts of Scotland, where storms could be more widespread and locally intense.”
The Met Office warning extends from Brighton in the south to Dundee in Scotland, which is scheduled for light rain on Saturday and a heavier spell on Sunday.
The weather is likely to be most intense in the north this weekend, where government agencies are bracing for floods.
The Scotland Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has issued a chain of warnings for the country.
Officials have laid down four warnings for the country, all amber alerts.
Amber alerts indicating flooding is “possible” are now in place for the following areas:
– Caithness and Sutherland
– Easter Ross and Great Glen
– Orkney
– Wester Ross
