A new study published by Advancing Earth and Space Science forecasted summers to last “half the year” by 2100 if current carbon emissions are not reduced. The study has found that by the end of the century winter will last less than two months, and spring and autumn will be squeezed in by a rapidly expanding summer. Climate Change is lengthening the start and end date of the season in the Northern Hemisphere, the study suggests, potentially triggering huge changes for countries within Europe, North America, and parts of Africa and Asia.

Yuping Guan, a physical oceanographer at the State Key Laboratory of Tropical Oceanography, South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences wrote: “Summers are getting longer and hotter while winters shorter and warmer due to global warming”.

The researchers discovered that summers were lengthening and winters becoming shorter all across the Northern Hemisphere after studying historical daily climate data from 1952 to 2011.

Using current climate change models they predicted how the seasons will shift in the future, finding summer temperatures filling nearly six months of the year by 2100.

Between 1952 to 2011 the length of typical summer temperatures in regions across the Northern Hemisphere grew from 78 to 95 days.

In the same time period, the days of winter shrank from 76 to 73 days.

The seasons in between such as spring and autumn contracted from 124 to 115 days, and 87 to 82 days respectively.

Climate change is also pushing forward the start of autumn and winter, the study claims.

The greatest changes in the length and start date of the seasons have been experienced in the Mediterranean region and the Tibetan Plateau.

Mr Guan, the lead scientist involved in the study, added: “Numerous studies have already shown that the changing seasons cause significant environmental and health risks.”

The changing seasons will upset animal migration, hibernation, and the flowering of plants.

Animals may not adapt fast enough to the disruption to their food sources.

Referring to the study, Congwen Zhu of the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences in Beijing stated: “A hotter and longer summer will suffer more frequent and intensified high-temperature events, heatwaves, and wildfires.”

The addition of short winters will cause instability that leads to cold surges and winter storms, such as the recent heavy snowfall in Texas.

Climate scientist at Kent State University Scott Sheridan said: “This is a good overarching starting point for understanding the implications of seasonal change.”

The research paper was called, ‘Changing Lengths of the Four Seasons by Global Warming’.

The lead authors were Yuping Guan and Jiamin Wang.
