Authorities fear two boys who fled from police into crocodile-infested mangroves may have been taken by the reptiles.

The boys were in a stolen car when police intercepted it at Mount Elliot near Townsville before dawn on Friday.

The boys, aged in their mid to late teens, fled on foot and ran into mangroves about 4.30am and have not been seen since.

The boys were last seen at Cape Cleveland Road near Australian Institute of Marine Science

North Queensland is crocodile country and police are still searching the mangroves for the pair.

The boys are described as Aboriginal.
