A tsunami warning has been issued after a powerful earthquake hit near the coast of New Zealand.

The quake – which measured 7.9 on the richter scale – triggered officials to urgently look at whether a tsunami could occur.

The alert from The U.S-based National Tsunami Warning Center said the event is being reviewed to determine the threat levels to coastal towns and cities.

It’s after an earthquake also struck southwest of Sumatra in Indonesia.
