Trump taunts NY State Dems for Gold Star family tuition fail

President Trump late Friday night called out New York State Democrats for blocking additional tuition assistance for children of deceased or injured veterans.

“In New York State, Democrats blocked a Bill expanding College Tuition for Gold Star families after approving aid for illegal immigrants,” Trump tweeted. “No wonder so many people are leaving N.Y. Very Sad!”

The President was referring to a stalled state bill that would add funding to a program that provides free tuition and college housing payments to children, spouses and financial dependents of either slain, severely disabled or missing soldiers who served after 1980.

The bill has twice passed the state Senate, but on Tuesday never made it out of a Democratic-controlled state Assembly committee.

The state did provide $27 million in this year’s budget for tuition assistance for the kids of undocumented immigrants, but college funding for veterans’ families wasn’t increased.

On Wednesday, Gov. Cuomo promised to add funding for the vets program — hopefully before the legislative session ends in June, he said.

“I would support providing the free college tuition to SUNY schools for children of people who were lost in service to this nation.”
