Trump says Joe Biden ‘lost the Black Vote’ with latest gaffe
Joe Biden “lost the Black Vote” as a result of a disastrous interview he gave this week, President Trump said Friday.
Trump specifically highlighted Biden’s suggestion that Hispanic-Americans were more diverse in “attitude” than blacks.
“Sleepy Joe Biden just lost the Black Vote. This statement is a disaster from which their is no recovery!” Trump tweeted.
The president later deleted the tweet and replaced it with one saying Biden was “no longer worthy of the Black Vote.”
In an interview taped Tuesday with black and Hispanic journalists, Biden said: “Unlike the African-American community, with notable exceptions, the Latino community is an incredibly diverse community with incredibly different attitudes.”
The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee asked a black journalist if he was a “junkie” in the same interview after the reporter asked Biden if he had taken a cognitive test, as Trump has suggested he do.
Biden on Thursday attempted to walk back his remark about diversity among blacks, tweeting, “In no way did I mean to suggest the African American community is a monolith—not by identity, not on issues, not at all.”
The former vice president defeated Sen. Bernie Sanders in this year’s Democratic primaries with strong black support, but recently has struggled with rude gaffes.
In May, Biden walked back comments telling voters they “ain’t black” if they support a candidate other than him.
Trump’s campaign is seeking to make inroads with black voters, pointing to Biden’s authorship of a 1994 crime law blamed for contributing to the “mass-incarceration” of minorities. Trump often notes he signed a reform law that reduced many prison sentences.
