Trump forced into humiliating climbdown over Syria as US military poised to send in tanks

This comes despite President Trump insisting that he is “bringing our soldiers back home.” Newsweek claimed that an armoured brigade consisting of 30 Abrams tanks would be deployed to eastern Syria to protect strategic oilfields in the region. On Thursday Trump tweeted that the oil fields must “never” be allowed to fall into the hands of terrorist group ISIS.

In a post to his twitter account, the President said: “The oil fields discussed in my speech on Turkey/Kurds yesterday were held by ISIS until the United States took them over with the help of the Kurds.

“We will never let a reconstituted ISIS have those fields!”

In a speech at the White House on Wednesday he added: “We’ve secured the oil, and, therefore, a small number of US troops will remain in the area where they have the oil.

“And we’re going to be protecting it, and we’ll be deciding what we’re going to do with it in the future.”

Trump then justified his decision to recall the majority of US troops, by insisting that the US had already paid a high enough price in the ongoing conflict.

He said: “Let someone else fight over this long-bloodstained sand.

“Eight long years after President Obama’s ill-fated push at regime change, U.S. troops are still on the ground in Syria.

“More than half a million people are dead, hundreds of thousands are terribly injured, and millions more Syrians are displaced.

Erdogan defies Trump and Putin as Turkey and Kurds resume feud

“It really is a nightmare of misery.”

Before Turkey’s assault, up to three quarters of Syrian oil was situated in Kurdish-controlled areas.

The Kurds gained control of the oil wells during their battle with ISIS forces, and were supported by the US military.

Now Pentagon officials are increasingly worried that the oil fields could fall under the control of Iran, as a result of President Recep Erdogan’s military campaign against the Kurds.

In later tweets Trump claimed that the Kurds do not bear any resentment towards the US and appreciate all the US support they received.

He tweeted that he had spoken to the Syrian Democratic Force’s top general and commented: “I really enjoyed my conversation with General Mazloum Abdi.

“He appreciates what we have done, and I appreciate what the Kurds have done.

“Perhaps it is time for the Kurds to start heading to the Oil Region!”

However senior Kurdish figures have accused the Americans of “betrayal”.

Earlier in the week Turkey and Russia reached a “historic” deal aimed at keeping Kurdish forces away from Syria’s border with Turkey.

Under the plan, Russian and Turkish forces will conduct joint patrols to ensure that Kurdish fighters do not reenter territory that they have vacated.

In addition Kurdish fighters will have to pull back from the towns of Manbij and Tal Rifat, both of which lie outside the current area of conflict.

Russian and Syrian soldiers will also carry out joint patrols in areas currently not occupied by the Turkish military.

Putin’s agreement with Erdogan represents another diplomatic success for the Russian leader at the expense of the US.
