Trump ‘feels very badly’ for Theresa May after backing Boris and Farage

“I feel badly for Theresa, I like her very much,” Trump said in response to the news she is stepping down in weeks.

“She’s a good woman, she worked very hard. She’s very strong.”

May announced this afternoon she will quit on June 7 and the president delivered his response a few hours later as he set off from the White House for a trip to Japan.

He added: “She decided to do something that some people were surprised at, some people weren’t.

“It’s for the good of her country. But I like her very much. In fact, I’ll be seeing her in two weeks.”

The comments appear to suggest he agrees that it was time for Mrs May to step down.

The President has previously said Boris Johnson – the favourite to succeed her – would make a good Prime Minister and criticised May’s negotiation attempt with the EU.

Trump is also close with Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage and once recommending him as the UK ambassador to the US.

She acknowledged her frustration at being unable to deliver Brexit in the years since the vote to leave – something she has been heavily criticised for.

Trump urged her last summer to take a harder line with the EU.

May added today: “I negotiated the terms of our exit and a new relationship with our closest neighbours that protects jobs, our security and our union.

“I have done everything I can to convince MPs to back that deal.

“Sadly, I have not been able to do so. I tried three times. I believe it was right to persevere, even where the odds against success seemed high.

“But it is now clear to me that it is in the best interests of the country for a new prime minister to lead that effort.

“So I am today announcing that I will resign as the leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party on Friday 7 June so that a successor can be chosen.”
