Tragic mum’s final text to husband in lockdown before taking own life upstairs

A mum-of-two tragically took her own life after a text argument in lockdown with her husband, who was in another room.

Amanda Jayne Sedgwick, 49, was found dead on a bed in her home in Doncaster on May 19, 2020, after sending several texts to her husband, including one that told him: "You've won."

She was described as a much loved mum who enjoyed cooking, crochet and knitting.

In a statement, her mother Pamela said: "I miss my daughter so much, it's hard to put into words how much I miss her.”

An inquest into her death at Doncaster Coroners Court heard that the couple had suffered marital issues for a number of years, YorkshireLive reports.

Ambulance crews were called at 10.40pm on May 19, 2020, after her husband found her upstairs on a bed unresponsive.

When a Yorkshire Ambulance Service Crew arrived at 10.50pm they observed that she had been dead for some time and rigor mortis had already set in.

Giving evidence, pathologist Dr Charles Wilson said that it was likely that she had been dead a "couple of hours" by the time paramedics arrived on the scene.

Her cause of death was given as drug toxicity from overdosing on prescribed medication.

Her husband was observed as being extremely intoxicated at the scene.

Later searches found several packs of medication in the bin and a text conversation between Amanda and her husband that night whilst they were in the house.

Her husband was investigated but released and no charges were ever brought against him

Evidence live in court from officer in charge DC Kate Norton heard that the couple had sent a number of text messages to each other on the night that she died.

Asked what the nature of the messages were by coroner Louise Slater, DC Norton responded: “The text messages were centred around the marriage not working.

“This had been a theme running for a long time throughout the marriage.”

The inquest heard that Amanda and her husband were sending texts to each other from separate rooms on the night of May 19.

At 7.59pm Amanda sent a text to say: "You've won."

A few minutes later at 8.09pm her husband replied to say: "I would quite happily die right now, so no (sic) you have won."

Amanda replied at 8.12pm to say: "Too late, I took it first. You won."

She then added: "Love that they were your last words to me."

He replied a short time later to say "Whatever," later adding: "Cherish them."

In her last message sent to her husband at 8.27pm, Amanda said: "I didn't think it would happen.

"I never thought a man would get me this low. Well done you, you are so much better than me."

Her body was found at 10.40pm that night when her husband made a 999 call.

In a pre-prepared statement read out at the inquest, her husband denied being responsible for her death.

The inquest heard that there was no evidence that Amanda had suffered from mental health issues. However, it was heard that she had complained about her husband drinking too much.

Coroner Louise Slater said: “It is clear that Amanda was a 49-year-old woman who was found suddenly and unexpectedly deceased on May 19 last year.

"She had been with her husband for a period of 23 years and she had two sons.

"The relationship had been challenging at times. At the time of Amanda’s death she had been furloughed due to Covid.

“It is also clear that there were a number of texts between Amanda and her husband during the evening of May 19.

“It was not a particularly pleasant exchange that evening. I am satisfied that Amanda carried out a deliberate act and she did so with the intention of taking her own life. Therefore I conclude that Amanda died as a result of suicide.”
