Tragedy as soldier, 23, promised to call son just hours before she took her life

A 23-year-old soldier had promised to call her young son just hours before she tragically took her own life at an army barracks after a night out, an inquest has heard.

Sophie Madden died suddenly in a Ministry of Defence (MOD) building in Folkestone, Kent on June 10.

She was a gunner in the 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, based in Albemarle Barracks, Northumberland.

Police officers responded to the incident at around 9.35am on Friday (June 10), accompanied by South East Coast Ambulance Service.

Sophie, who was serving in the 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Today (September 5) an inquest heard that the Sophie was "chatty" and "enjoying herself" on the night when she and pals visited three bars.

She made her way back to camp between 12.10am and 12.30am and played pool with fellow soldiers before heading to her room, where she phoned her sister Chantelle Madden, who was minding Sophie's son.

She wanted to speak to the youngster but Chantelle informed her that he was sleeping, so Sophie promised she'd call back in the morning.

However, she was found dead at around 9.35am the next day.

Her cause of death was given as suspension.

Chantelle said the news of Sophie's death was a "total surprise" and that her sister was "so well loved".

At the time of her death she had 173mg of alcohol per 100ml in her blood, twice the legal driving limit.

Detective Sergeant Andrew West of Kent Police found there were no signs of third party involvement or criminal activity.

The inquest heard that she had been placed on the vulnerability register in May 2020 after she fell and hit her head while intoxicated.

But after a mandatory two-year observation period she was taken off the list.

Ministry of Defence GP Dr John Clark also revealed Sophie had no history of mental health problems.

Ruling a verdict of suicide, Coroner Katrina Hepburn said: "I'm satisfied it was Sophie who did the act … and there is no evidence of anyone else being involved.

"I have to consider whether Sophie intended to take her own life or if it was a cry for help.

"There is no evidence she was expecting anyone to come in and didn't tell anyone she was feeling in any way suicidal, or made anyone aware of any issues when she went in.

"I am satisfied she did in fact intend to take her own life, and satisfied all other scenarios have been ruled out. Therefore a conclusion of suicide is needed on the balance of probability."
