“When something of this magnitude occurs in the golf world, we all grieve at the same time”

PGA Tour Series China

In a statement on Sunday, PGA Tour Series China said: “Today, in Sanya, China, Arie Irawan of Malaysia died at his hotel of apparent natural causes.

“Irawan, 28, was in China playing in the Sanya Championship, the second event of the 2019 PGA TOUR Series-China season. He had missed the 36-hole cut.

“The PGA Tour and the China Golf Association grieve at this loss of one of our members and share sincere condolences to Arie’s wife, Marina, and his parents, Ahmad and Jeny.

‘When something of this magnitude occurs in the golf world, we all grieve at the same time.”

Officials cancelled the final round of the tournament, making it a 54-hole event, out of respect to the family, officials confirmed.

The coroner’s report had not yet been completed, the statement added.

Hundreds of fans have paid tribute to the golfer, who was married to wife Marina.

Joe Carlos posted: “Tour officials cancel fourth round out of respect for death of Malaysian golfer Arie Irawan.

“Humility and humbleness are great virtues. Thank you China PGA. Rest in Peace, Arie.”
