Town residents fume as overgrowth leaves them feeling like they’re in the jungle

Residents of a Dorset town have been left fuming after thick overgrowth in their street forced them either to walk on the road or fight their way through the foliage.

Mature lime trees on Burlington Road in Swanage have grown so out of control, locals would be forgiven for mistaking their surroundings for the set of an Indiana Jones movie.

People are now getting fed up after they "complained and complained" about the issue to Dorset Council, who are responsible for maintaining the footpaths, to "no avail".

Resident Anne Wood added: "The whole street needs cutting. I have seen a young mother with her baby in a buggy having to walk in the road because she couldn’t get up the path."

Locals said they often have problems with overgrowth during the summer months, but the local authority is typically quick to chop back the flora.

However this year homeowners say their pleas are falling on deaf ears.

One said: "If you try and walk through it you end up with a face full of leaves and insects.

"Someone in a wheelchair has got no chance.

"By this stage of the summer the council has usually cut it back by now but nothing has happened. You do wonder what our council tax is for."

Other locals compared their street with Swanage town centre, which they suspect has been cleaned up in time for tourists arriving for summer holidays.

However, a spokeswoman for Dorset Council said the local authority's teams are currently battling around 200,000 trees around the county.

Around a quarter of these are limes – which have "all been growing excessively".

"As soon as we were made aware of the situation at Burlington Road, we visited the area and felled one tree that was an immediate danger," she said.

"Our small team, who are dealing with the issues as quickly as possible around the county, will return to Burlington Street early next week to cut back and remove branches.

"Swanage Town Council have also kindly agreed to help remove some branches on Friday.

"In the meantime, we thank everyone for their patience and reassure them we will are dealing with this matter as quickly as we can."
