Tory association chair suspended from party as Nazi photo emerges

Chairman of Tory association in north London and ex councillor is suspended from party as photo emerges showing him wearing Nazi uniform ‘at party in 1980s’

  • Colin Davis, a former councillor until 2019, was seen ‘in full Nazi military uniform’
  • The photograph appears to show him dressed up in a back garden of a property
  • Suspended Tory chairman said he did not remember but could not ‘rule it out’
  • Enfield Southgate Conservatives suspended him pending an investigation

The chairman of a Conservative Association in north London and former councillor has been suspended from the Tory party after he was allegedly pictured wearing a Nazi uniform in a photo taken at a party in the 1980s.

Colin Davis, who specialises in military law, was apparently pictured, Jewish News first revealed, dressed up in a back garden of a property in what appears to be a full German WWII uniform.

The suspended chair of Enfield Southgate Conservative Association, said he had no ‘recollection’ of being at a reported party around 40 years ago or wearing that uniform.

He said: ‘I have no recollection of this at all. Yes, there were various wild parties, very perverse themes expressed… I can’t absolutely rule it out.’

Mr Davis had been a councillor at Spelthorne Borough Council in Staines, Surrey from 2007 until 2019 and was reportedly also going to stand at the May Local Election.

Before Enfield Southgate Conservatives removed profiles of Mr Davis from their website, the Tory association had said Mr David was ‘busy running popular campaigns of national relevance and starting to campaign for the May 2022 local elections.’

Mr Davis had been listed on a London law firm’s website as specialising in Military Law in which he was claimed to be ‘well connected with the British Armed Forces’ but stepped down from that position 11 months ago.

A spokeswoman for Carters told MailOnline following the Jewish News article: ‘We are very concerned about an article naming this Firm with reference to Mr Colin Davis.

‘Carters solicitors wish to make it clear that Colin Davis has never been employed by us.

‘Mr Davis acted as a consultant to this firm for a brief period, and this association was brought to a conclusion by Carters Solicitors 11 months ago.

‘We are shocked and surprised by the content of the article and disassociate ourselves in relation to Mr Davis and this deplorable conduct.’

The former Conservative MP for Enfield Southgate David Burrowes also works at Carters Solicitors.

He lost his seat in 2017 to Bambos Charalambous for the Labour Party, who also beat him in 2019.

Mr Davis, pictured, had been a councillor at Spelthorne Borough Council in Staines, Surrey from 2007 until 2019 and was reportedly also going to stand at the May elections

Mr Davis in a profile online on his association’s website claimed he was ‘born and bred’ in this constituency and said ‘we face a hostile Labour held Borough Council and an equally hostile representative in Westminster’.

Ahead of May 5 Local Elections, the Jewish Leadership Council and Board of Deputies held a hustings at Cockfosters and Southgate Synagogue.

At it Mr Davis, who had not yet been suspended, said he was not ‘familiar’ with the photograph and as a councillor ‘exposed extremism’.

He added: ‘On the other hand like Voltaire, I have tended to defend those whose own extremism has sometimes manifested itself in extreme types of intolerance. That doesn’t include defence of Nazism.’

Councillor Joanne Laban, leader of the Enfield Southgate Conservatives, told the MailOnline: ‘Mr Davis has been suspended from the party by Enfield Southgate Conservative Association pending investigation.

‘The Conservative Party takes allegations of this nature extremely seriously and the swift action taken reflects this.

‘We are proud to have members of the Jewish Community standing in the local elections. I look forward to both Julian Sampson and Ruby Sampson joining the Conservative team on Enfield Council.’

Mr Davis has been contacted by MailOnline for a response.
