Tory MPs last night reacted with fury to Theresa May’s attempt to blame Parliament for the Brexit impasse.
They condemned the Prime Minister for saying that the public wanted MPs to get on with it but Parliament had ‘done everything possible to avoid making a choice’.
Her speech was labelled ‘toxic’ – while one MP even suggested it could incite attacks on parliamentarians. Others added that it lacked any significant update for the public.
Sam Gyimah, who resigned from the Cabinet over Mrs May’s deal in November, said: ‘Resorting to the “blame game” as the PM is doing is a low blow. All part of her strategy to run down the clock and rule out other options. Toxic.’

Ex-Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith said: ‘Why are we on bended knee to the EU begging for things we don’t need?
‘Next week should be a simple choice between her deal and No Deal. If it isn’t then it will be a national humiliation.’
Andrea Jenkyns added: ‘As usual another statement saying very little. PM says she regrets having to delay. Then don’t do it.’

Nick Boles, one of the MPs to have tabled amendments to the Brexit withdrawal agreement in a bid to scupper Mrs May’s deal, claimed the speech was typical of the Prime Minister.
He said: ‘Has anyone ever learned anything from a speech by Theresa May? How come everyone is so surprised?’
Labour MP Wes Streeting said: ‘I’ve thought long and hard before saying this, but Theresa May knows that MPs across the House are subjected to death threats – some very credible.

‘Her speech was incendiary and irresponsible. If any harm comes to any of us, she will have to accept her share of responsibility.’
Meanwhile Tory backbench Brexiteers publicly demanded Mrs May resign. Despite her speech being seen as a win for Tory Brexiteer Cabinet ministers, Nigel Evans said that unless Mrs May could deliver a swift departure from the EU, it was time for her to ‘move on’.
Nadine Dorries said her deal would pass the Commons easily if she agreed to step down as Prime Minister. And Peter Bone accused her of ‘betraying’ the public by pushing Brexit beyond March 29.
The comments come amid widespread anger, from both hardline Brexiteers and Remainers, after the Prime Minister wrote to Brussels to request an extension of Article 50 to the end of June.
Mr Evans, MP for Ribble Valley, told BBC News: ‘She has failed and I think there are now big question marks as to whether she should be allowed to carry on.’
