Theresa May’s Brexit deal faces strong DUP opposition

Old worries resurface in Northern Ireland as Britain’s parliament considers the Brexit deal.

Some of the strongest opponents of British Prime Minister Theresa May’s deal with the European Union are in Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which props up her minority government.

The DUP found itself at odds with its electorate two years ago in the Brexit referendum when Northern Ireland voted overwhelmingly to stay in the EU.

The staunchly pro-British, pro-Brexit party is afraid that May’s deal could split the United Kingdom.
