Tensions ERUPT as thousands protest in Washington DC against ‘stolen’ US election

Donald Trump: Deepfake of US President discusses election

The president has repeatedly alleged, without providing solid evidence, that November’s election was “stolen” by his opponents. In response the Trump campaign launched a number of legal challenges, though failed to reverse the result in a single state.

Tuesday’s ‘Save America’ protest is taking place ahead of a mass rally of Trump supporters on Wednesday, coinciding with a Congressional vote to certify Joe Biden’s election win via the Electoral College.

Mr Trump has vowed to attend Wednesday’s ‘Save America March’ in person.

On Sunday he retweeted a promotional video posted by one of the organisers adding: “I will be there. Historic day!”

Two previous rallies by Trump supporters against the election result last year ended in violent clashes with counter-protestors.

At the request of Mayor Muriel Bowser the DC National Guard will be deployed to help manage the protests.

Ms Bowser claimed demonstrations in November and December had “resulted in a large influx of participants, violence and criminal activity”.

Businesses across the city have been boarding up ahead of the rally.

A group of 13 Republican lawmakers, including Senator Ted Cruz, have indicated they will object to certifying Mr Biden’s victory arguing more time is needed to investigate accusations of fraud.

However other Republicans have said they will support the certification which is expected to pass.

President Trump has been urging vice-president Mike Pence to reject the electors and send the result back to the states, though according to AP he lacks the constitutional power to do this.

On Tuesday he tweeted: “The Vice President has the power to reject fraudulently chosen electors.”

He later added: “I hope the Democrats, and even more importantly, the weak and ineffective RINO [Republican In Name Only] section of the Republican Party, are looking at the thousands of people pouring into DC.

“They won’t stand for a landslide election victory to be stolen.”

If the certification is approved Mr Biden will be inaugurated as US president on January 20.

Despite Mr Trump’s claims the 2020 presidential election was described as the “most secure ever” by the federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

The agency commented: “While we know there are many unfounded claims and opportunities for misinformation about the process of our elections, we can assure you we have the utmost confidence in the security and integrity of our elections, and you should too.

There are fears of clashes on Wednesday between supporters and opponents of Mr Trump.

Earlier this week Enrique Tarrio, leader of the far-right Proud Boys, was arrested in Washington DC in relation to an incident at which a ‘Black Lives Matter’ banner was burned at a previous pro-Trump rally.

Protests in November and December saw violent clashes between Mr Trump’s backers and counter-protestors, some of whom were dressed all in black and carrying shields.

Joe Biden has condemned Mr Trump’s refusal to accept the election result.

On Twitter he commented: “In America, politicians can’t assert, take, or seize power.

“It has to be given by the American people.

“We can’t ever give that up. The will of the people must always prevail.”
