Tearful Meghan told staff ‘it didn’t have to be this way’ after quitting royals

Meghan Markle said “it didn’t have to be this way” during her final public engagement as a royal, according to a biographer.

On March 9 this year, she and Prince Harry appeared at Westminster Abbey for the Commonwealth Service – and barely appeared to interact with Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Prior to the ceremony, the Duchess of Sussex met with members of the Association of Commonwealth Universities scholars at Buckingham Palace.

Journalist Omid Scobie, who wrote the unofficial Harry and Meghan biography Finding Freedom along with Carolyn Durand, attended and got a personal goodbye from Meghan, Express.co.uk reports.

He says the Duchess hugged him before parting ways with her aides.

Mr Scobie wrote: “Staff who had been with the couple from day one were mourning the end of what was supposed to be a happy story: two people fall in love, get married, have a baby, serve the Queen, the end. Instead, they were leaving the country.

“As Meghan gave me a final hug goodbye, she said, ‘It didn’t have to be this way’.”

In an article for Harper’s Bazaar, he added: “Tears that the Duchess had been bravely holding back [were] free to flow among familiar faces.

“The Duchess of Sussex emotionally [bid] much-loved aides farewell, with her flight 'home' to Canada leaving in a matter of hours.

“Meghan would fly back to Canada on the last commercial flight of the day, eager to be back in Vancouver Island by the morning before Archie wakes up.”

Another section of the book claims Meghan told a pal “I gave up my entire life for this family” and that she was “willing to do whatever it takes”.

But what followed was a breakdown in relations between Harry and Meghan amd the rest of the Royal Family, as the pair wrestled for control of their lives.

According to a source in the book, “the courtiers blame Meghan, and some family do”.

However, Meghan “tearfully” told a friend before they left for good: “I gave up my entire life for this family. I was willing to do whatever it takes. But here we are. It’s very sad.”

And according to the new book, it was Harry who reportedly wanted out of the Royal Family more than Meghan.

He had felt like a "spare part" next to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, long before meeting his now-wife Meghan, it has been claimed.
