Teacher killed by student in horror knife attack in school in France

A teacher has died after being fatally stabbed by a student at a Catholic school in France earlier today. The pupil has been arrested after the attack, which took place in the town of Saint Jean de Luz.

A student told French media that the attacker got up from his seat during a lesson, holding a bladed weapon between sheets of paper.

He had reportedly blocked the door of the classroom before lunging at the teacher with the 10cm long knife and stabbing them in the chest.

Paramedics arrived at Saint-Thomas d’Aquin Catholic high school but could not revive the teacher.

It is thought that the victim is in their 50s and was teaching a Spanish lesson at the time of the attack.

Daily Mirror reports that the boy fled the scene and when police found him in another room he was making incoherent remarks, claiming he could hear voices and that he was possessed.

It is believed that he was not known to police but had a history of mental health issues.

Prosecutor Jerome Bourrier said: “I can confirm that there was indeed a knife attack and that the victim has just died.”

The French education minister Pap Ndiaye is on their way to the area.

Pyrénées-Atlantiques Senator Frédérique Espagnac has sent her condolescences to the teacher’s family and said she “totally condemns this act of violence against a teacher”.

And government spokesman Olivier Véran said politicians give their support to the “educational community” and told reporters: “I can hardly imagine the trauma that this can represent.”
