Taiwan earthquake: Massive magnitude 5.0 earthquake rocks island in Ring of Fire

According to reports, the quake hit the city of Hualien on the east coast. The earthquake struck the island at 12.05pm local time (5.05am BST). According to the China Earthquake Networks Centre, the quake hit a depth of 6km (3.7 miles).

As of yet, there have been no reports of damage or injuries.

The quake caused “mild shocks” throughout central Taiwan according to Taiwan News.

Today’s latest quake comes 12 hours after the island was struck by an initial earthquake.

The magnitude 4.5 quake struck in the same area on Saturday at 10.52pm (3.52pm BST).

According to local reports, it hit a depth of 7.2km (4.4 miles). 

Due to its position within the Ring of Fire, Taiwan has is prone to earthquakes.

In 2016, the island was rocked by a devastating 6.4 magnitude quake.

The seismic shock hit the northeast of Pingtung City in southern Taiwan.

The magnitude 6.4 struck in the early hours of the morning when most were asleep.

Due to that, 116 people were reported dead.

Striking in February, the quake caused maximum destruction as families gathered to celebrate the New Year.

One resident had said: “My home completely turned into debris. I didn’t know what was happening.

“I was really frightened as I have never seen such an earthquake.”
