Hundreds of randy revellers were forced to flee a swingers' club after a carbon monoxide alarm wreaked havoc inside the venue, according to reports.

Around 300 thrill-seekers were forced to leave the venue in the sleepy German town of Hattingen clad only in bathrobes after the alarm went off.

Several swingers said they felt queasy after the horror unfolded late on Saturday night.

Emergency services in the town of Hattingen, between Dortmund and Duesseldorf in North Rhine-Westphalia, told local media that guests were ferried away from the venue on buses before being seen by first-aiders.

At least 10 revellers who had complained of feeling unwell following the incident required treatment for exposure to the toxic gas, authorities said.

German firefighters said no dangerous levels of carbon monoxide were detected once they had arrived and that around 160 workers were involved in the operation.

Carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas which has no odour, taste or colour, can be fatal if humans are exposed to it in large enough quantities.

There are around 60 deaths from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning in England and Wales each year, according to the Office for National Statistics.

The harmful gas travels into the bloodstream after it is inhaled and then combines with haemoglobin, the element of red blood cells which transports oxygen around the body, to form carboxyhaemoglobin.

When this occurs haemoglobin can no longer move oxygen around the blood, potentially leading to death.

Dozens of carbon monoxide alarms sold over Amazon and eBay were pulled off the shelves after they flunked safety tests last year.

Four alarms available for sale on the retail websites were not able to notice the gas, an investigation by Which? found.
