A man, who was asleep in a doorway in Manhattan, was shot in the arm.
He allegedly shouted at the suspect: “What the hell are you doing?” and put his fingers to his ear as he pretended to call 911, according to the New York Daily News.
Mayor Eric Adams said: “Homelessness turning into a homicide. We need to find this person and we need New Yorkers to help us. This is a cold-blooded act of murder.”
The attacks in DC happened on March 3, March 8, and March 9.
The third attack was fatal as the victim was found in a burning tent with gunshot and stab wounds.
The NYPD, DC Metropolitan Police, and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives were among the teams assisting in the hunt.
DC Police have confirmed that they are exploring the theory that the attacks might be related.
Teams of cops and outreach workers have been warning those experiencing homelessness to seek shelter.
Mayor Adams has also implemented an aggressive campaign to clear the subways of the homeless due to a surge of crime.
Earlier this month, 143 people were arrested and the city’s subways had 455 people removed from trains and stations.
