Suspected cartel violence prompts security warning to Americans in Mexico
Deadly violence unleashed in the Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo prompted US officials to issue a security warning.
The US consulate in Nuevo Laredo released the advisory Sunday as shootouts erupted in the northern city, where suspected gangsters torched cars and engaged troops in gunfire over the weekend that left one alleged gunman dead.
“The Consulate continues to monitor the security situation in the city of Nuevo Laredo following violence between Mexican authorities and criminal organizations that started on November 15,” the US consulate said Sunday.
Americans were warned Saturday to notify friends and family of their whereabouts, as well as avoid public places.
With violence throughout the city, the consulate issued a security alert urging employees to take shelter due to the “multiple gunfights and blockades throughout the city.”
It later imposed a curfew Saturday afternoon on personnel, which said they were “subject to restrictions on their movements and an evening curfew until further notice.” The curfew was lifted Sunday.
The weekend’s gunbattles come amid a series of violent cartel encounters in the country, including the massacre of nine Mormon women and kids earlier this month in Sonora.
