In the last week, police departments across Mexico have been hit with allegations of police brutality after two videos went viral which showed two detained men being beaten in separate incidents before dying in police custody.
The most recent footage registered the moment Giovanni López was placed in a choke hold by an officer in the state of Jalisco after he was allegedly detained in the street for not wearing a face mask outside the family home on May 4.
López was beaten by the police and shoved into a department pickup truck and died at a local hospital May 5 due to a brain injury. His body showed signs of torture.
The video went public last Tuesday, sparking several protests that turned violent in last Thursday and Friday in Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-largest city.
At least 29 were arrested and then reported missing after they had been abducted by cops, according to governor Enrique Alfaro.
‘It embarrasses me, it distresses me, it greatly pains me as a man from Jalisco, and as governor,’ Alfaro said in a video posted on Twitter.
Alfaro ordered the missing people to be tracked down and said late on Saturday they had all been found.
