A neurosurgeon allegedly said his "very expensive" watch had been damaged as his passenger lay dead next to him in a crash.

The surgeon who has been accused of drunk driving when his passenger Samantha Thomas, 24, died in the 138mph crash in Mobile, Alabama.

Jonathan Nakhla, 36, "whined" about his expensive watch after the fatal accident, a court has heard.

He also complained about his luxury car being damaged while young medical student Samantha died, reports Metro.

The hearing was told Nakhla and Thomas, who was his neighbour, had been drinking during the day by the pool at their apartment complex, according to surveillance footage from the property.

Shortly after midnight the pair decided to go and get ice cream, he is said to have told police, reports Mirror Online.

Within five minutes of leaving the apartment, the pair were involved in a deadly smash that reportedly caused his convertible to flip over and land in a ditch.

Prosecutors allege the analysis of Nakhla's luxury Audi R8 Spyder supercar's computer recorded a top speed of 138mph.

The model is able to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 3.6 seconds.

First responders testified at the hearing that Nakhla did not seem upset over Thomas' death.

The court was reportedly told moments after emergency services arrived he was heard to complain about his 'very expensive' watch.

The neurosurgeon also allegedly made a phone call while inside an ambulance at the scene, telling someone on the phone: "I know baby, you loved that car."

The claims were made at a preliminary hearing to decide whether he should be indicted on a manslaughter charge.

Prosecutors alleged his breath alcohol levels were over the state's legal limit, but toxicology results are still pending, US media reported this week.

Nakhla’s legal team has denied he was drunk-driving and labelled data obtained by prosecutors inaccurate.

The neurosurgeon has reportedly been fired from his job since the deadly smash.

In addition to the manslaughter charge, Thomas' father is suing Nahkla in a wrongful death lawsuit.
