Sudden snow storm sees trapped Brits ‘sleep on the floor’ of old school pub

Dozens of people were forced to seek shelter overnight in a pub after getting caught in a heavy snowstorm.

The Bear Inn in East Sussex took in around 40 people last night (Sunday, December 11) who had been stranded in "treacherous" snow.

People were forced to abandon their cars on a road near Burwash at around 5pm after the frosty conditions made the roads impassable.

The group, which included children, initially sought shelter in a different pub but were eventually kicked out by an "absent pub landlord".

They were then forced to walk two miles in the freezing conditions to take refuge in another pub.

Luckily the staff at The Bear Inn came to the rescue in an act of "human kindness", offering to host the stranded travellers all night as well as provide them with free hot food.

Dr Alexandra Loske, who was among those caught in the snowstorm, took to Twitter to tell her followers what had happened.

She wrote: "Stranded and snowed in near Burwash since 5pm, and we all got kicked out of the first pub.

"A two-mile treck through the snow to The Bear Inn, which has taken in dozens of people and is staying open all night. Hot drinks, logfires, mattresses for children. Human kindness."

This morning she shared a picture of the snowy view from the pub after staying there all night and thanked staff, writing: "Good morning from Sussex. A bit snowy here. Around 40 of us were taken in by the lovely people at The Bear Inn at Burwash.

"Pauline, Justin and their team looked after us stranded souls. Big shout out to them."

Dr Loske said that they had taken in "five families with children, all snowed in or broken down" as she called the team at the inn "amazing".

She revealed that a chef at the pub had even given up his room for two elderly couples while children were provided with pillows and mattresses to sleep on the floor.

The pub confirmed on their Facebook page last night that they were offering a warm place for people to go to as they said: "We are open! Offering a warm place for people to come into with hot drinks."

People have since flocked to their social media to praise them for their kind-hearted gesture.

One person commented: "Stayed open all night for us stranded drivers! What a place, thank you for your kindness".

Another added: "Well done you deserve all the patronage you can get. Human kindness at its best".

Temperatures across the UK have plummeted recently as a chilly Arctic blast hits the country.

Snow storms blanketing the UK on Sunday evening caused chaos, with airport runways closing, train cancellations and dangerous driving conditions.

But experts have warned that the icy weather is set to continue, with the Met Office currently issuing yellow weather warnings for snow and ice until Thursday (December 15).
