Soviet tank spotted parked in quiet London street on Google Maps Street View

A tank has been spotted parked in a quiet London suburb.

An eagle-eyed Google Maps Street View user noticed the armoured military vehicle in South East London.

It was seen on a patch of land near to a street between Bermondsey and Elephant and Castle.

However, the huge Soviet T-34 tank had lost some of its fearsome character.

Rather than exhibiting its standard green body, the machine had been painted in an array of bright colours, including yellow, orange and blue.

The vehicle has become part of an art project run by by Stompie Community Garden in Bermondsey, which "celebrates art and peace over division, conflict and war."

Such is the popularity of the tank, it even has its own social media profiles.

The community green organisation's website states: "The central feature of the space is a legendary T-34 Soviet tank which is reimagined intermittently by artists and the community who repaint its exterior.

"Stompie Garden is open to all as a place for reflection and calm, a stone's throw from the noise of the Old Kent Road."

Previous paint jobs include bright turquoise and flowers, with the word 'love' adorning the turret, a tribute to the NHS, featuring its logo and a white heart, and white with black stripes.

T-34 medium tanks were introduced by the Soviet Union in 1940 and used extensively throughout World War II.

It is not the first time unexpected sights have been snapped by one of Google's cameras.

Just days ago, it emerged that a Google Earth user had discovered a penis-shaped island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Joleen Vultaggio, 50, from Detriot, Michigan in the US, discovered the phallic-shaped landmass in the middle the Pacific Ocean while trawling the online world map.

She said: "I was looking around and it just popped up and I thought 'wow, that really looks like a man's parts.'

"I had to drop the pin on the map right away, so people know I didn't just stick that image through Photoshop or create it myself.

"I shared it so people could pull up the coordinates and see it with their own eyes that it's physically there and it really does look like one.

"I didn't go and measure how big it is, but considering it's in the middle of the ocean it's pretty big."

The unique island stretches more than 500m and is part of the Trinity Islands off the coast of New Caledonia, Oceania.
