Thousands of families across the UK could claim up to £200 towards their children's school uniforms as part of a new government scheme.

The new statutory guidance calls for schools to make uniforms more affordable, and was announced in November 2021.

Some local councils will offer the grants, and it will come into effect in September this year.

More high street options will be offered and households will also be able to buy second-hand uniforms, with schools being told to make sure the necessary arrangements are in place.

However, not all households are eligible for the school uniform grant, and specific details like how much you can get or when you have to apply will vary depending on your location.

How much money can I get towards my children’s school uniform?

Across England and Scotland, the grant is up to £150 and Welsh children could receive up to £200 towards their uniforms. Meanwhile, Northern Irish families may only get up to £67.50.

Most payments will be given in the summer, between July and August, roughly 10 to 15 days after you submit an application.

Who is eligible for the School Uniform Grant?

Gov.uk has a tool online where you can find out whether you are eligible for a grant simply by entering your postcode.

The School Uniform Grant scheme extends across the UK to Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The specific amount received varies on location and income, and only 27 out of 149 English councils offer the grant.

You can claim the money if you are on a low income, or it can proved that you receive one of the following benefits:

• Child tax credit
• Free school meals
• Income support
• Income-based jobseeker’s allowance
• Income-related employment and support allowance
• Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
• The guaranteed element of pension credit
• Universal credit
• Working tax credit run-on – paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for working tax credit

How to apply for the grant

You must contact your local council to find out if you are eligible, and then apply on their website.

Anybody applying must have proof of address, an ID, proof of guardianship of your child such as a birth certificate, and a recent bank statement or a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions.

In Wales, the funding comes from central government as part of the Pupil Development Grant, and then distributed by local councils.

Similarly, funding in Northern Ireland comes from the Education Authority and from central government in Scotland.
