SNL's Michael Che hits back after being accused of ‘culturally appropriating' black people for using ‘bro’ in sketch

MICHAEL Che used the word "bro" in a recent SNL sketch — and his critics say he's a culture vulture for it.

The sketch he wrote called "Gen Z Hospital," which aired on Saturday night, prompted a huge response online and some negative comments

Phrases like "gang gang," "stan" and "no cap" were used in the skit, which originates in AAVE, or African-American Vernacular English, according to Deadline.

“I’ve been reading about how my “gen z” sketch was misappropriating AAVE and I was stunned cause what the f**k is ‘AAVE’?" Che said in a since-deleted Instagram post.

"Turns out it’s an acronym for ‘African American vernacular english [sic].' You know, AAVE! That ol’ saying that actual black people use in conversation all the time!"

The SNL star acknowledged that "the sketch bombed. I’m used to that" but noted "if i could stop one person from calling everybody bro and bestie, I'm [sic] happy with that."

Che then said he loved AAVE "to the moon" after the skit elicited a negative reaction on social media.

But Twitter critics claimed the sketch, which featured Melissa Villasenior, Kate McKinnon, Bowen Yang, Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim and Mikey Day, was "poking fun" at AAVE.

“This Gen Z hospital skit on SNL is so stupid,” on user tweeted. “I’m so tired of nonblack people throwing random AAVE terms in their sentences and calling that horse s–t ‘Gen Z language.'”

“The appropriation of AAVE by white people is gross, the mislabeling of AAVE as a 'Gen Z phenomenon' is also gross," raged another.

"But on top of that, the SNL skit reads like they just pulled a list of terms from UrbanDictionary and sprinkled them in, not caring that AAVE has a defined grammar!”

Shortly after penning his response to the criticism, Che deleted it from his Instagram page.

Elon Musk hosted and Miley Cyrus was the musical guest during the action-packed episode, that saw the Tesla CEO discuss his Asperger's and Dogecoin.
