The now 80-year-old PJ Proby (pictured in London in 2009) lives in a rented cottage in Worcestershire and has confessed he has been single for more than two decades because his ideal date could land him in prison

Sixties pop star PJ Proby has been forced to cancel his farewell tour after making the sickening revelation that he is attracted to girls as young as 12.

The 80-year-old’s upcoming gigs have now been cancelled after he boasted in an interview ahead of the tour: ‘I won’t marry a girl I can’t raise from age of 12,13,14…I like it that they’re young and fresh.’

Born James Marcus Smith in Houston, Texas, Proby rivalled the likes of Elvis Presley and Sir Cliff Richard in his 1960s heyday.

The former star lives in a rented cottage in Worcestershire and says he has stayed single for more than two decades and doesn’t use dating apps because his ideal match could land him in prison.

After his admission, The Lyric Theatre in Carmarthen cancelled a show.

Solihull Council also shelved plans for Proby to appear, while gigs in Teesside and Rotherham were also called off.

The entire tour was subsequently cancelled.

The ageing singer also revealed he never believed his old friend Jimmy Savile was a paedophile.

He told the Daily Mirror: ‘I won’t marry a girl I can’t raise from the age of 12, 13 or 14. I like that they’re young and fresh-looking and don’t come with baggage – nobody’s messed with their heart and broken it.

‘They’re still in school so I can have a hand in their education and make sure their grades are all right, make sure the way they think about religion is all right, and what is and isn’t proper.’

He said the last ‘lady’ in his life was underage – a 13-year-old girl who he met in 1997 – but added: ‘I don’t think there’ll be another because it’s against the law’.

Proby made the revelation ahead of his 20-date farewell tour, which will see him perform at venues around the UK.

During a publicity interview with the newspaper he insisted he has never dated ‘young girls’ and had always married them instead – but none of them lasted longer than three years.

He married Marianne Adams when she was 16, Judy Howard when she was 17 and Dulcie Taylor, from Blackpool, when she was 21.

The singer was raised in America’s Deep South and tries to justify his obsession with underage girls by saying: ‘I was raised in Texas and most girls do marry by 12.’

Proby said he does not do online dating because the ‘agency would get in trouble’ and would go to prison for setting him up with the ‘woman’ of his dreams.

He said the only exception to his rule on only dating underage girls is the married BBC TV presenter Lucy Worsley, 45.

The singer said she seems ‘naughty’ and has a ‘youthful’ face.

He also insisted paedophile Savile was unfairly condemned by police and the media.

He told the Mirror: ‘That’s a side of Jimmy Savile I never saw. I went up to his place in Leeds a lot.’

Another old friend of his was the late disgraced PR mogul Max Clifford who died in prison after being convicted of indecent assault on four girls aged between 15 and 19.

He dated Cilla Black in 1965 and was friends with Elvis Presley, who he pointed out met his future wife Priscilla when she was still a child.

In the 1990s alcohol addiction saw him down five bottles of bourbon a day and suffer a heart attack. He had to teach himself to walk and talk again.

In 2012 he was cleared of benefit fraud.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) had alleged that Proby, who denied all the charges, cheated the benefits system out of more than £47,000 after informing the authorities he had just £5 in his bank account.

Proby is best remembered by UK audiences for splitting his tight trousers on stage because of his demanding dance routines.

After it happened at two concerts in Luton and Croydon he was banned from performing in Britain and his music career plummeted.

At the peak of his fame, when industry experts said his raw rendition of Somewhere, from West Side Story, was the best ever, he owned three houses in Beverly Hills and one in Chelsea.

He had three Rolls-Royces, his own Learjet plane and a luxury yacht. But he also had a penchant for drink-fuelled fights.

Having squandered his fortune he retired to a sleepy bungalow in Twyford near Evesham, Worcestershire, with his pet dachshund Tilly and a sign outside saying ‘Trespassers will be shot’.

In the scandalous interview he added that he doesn’t believe he has long to live, saying: ‘I always hold out hope, but I probably only have five more years to live. I’m damn lucky to have got this far.’
