Sister doubts 20st Frank James is tiny gunman who brought terror to subway
Frank James’ sister doubts that her 20st brother is the short gunman described by eyewitnesses to the New York City subway shooting.
Following the shooting which took place on Tuesday (April 12) in Brooklyn in which 29 people injured, police confirmed that suspect Mr James is now in custody following a 30-hour manhunt.
They say the key to James' U-Haul van was found at the scene of the crime, as was a credit card that had rented the vehicle out of Philadelphia.
But Catherine James Robinson, sister of the 62-year-old James said she was “surprised” to see him named as the suspect, both because of his nature and his appearance.
She told the New York Times: “I don’t think he would do anything like that. That’s not in his nature to do anything like that.”
Asked if her brother had sought mental health treatment, Robinson said he was not mentally ill.
She explained: “There was a lot that went on through our lives,” adding that their mother had died when James was five years old and stating that he had “been on his own his whole life”.
She said that she spoke to her brother only occasionally on the phone and the last time they talked was after the death of their younger sister several years prior.
And she said that James did not fit the description the police had released on Tuesday about the suspect – a man about 5ft 5ins and 170lbs.

She said her brother was over 6ft tall and about 300lbs, and that he had a bad back.
Robinson added that her brother often moved from city to city, never remaining in one place for too long and that she did not know what he did for work at the moment.
She also mentioned that James had appeared on podcasts and YouTube, seemingly referring to the suspect’s prolific posts on social media.
