Los Angeles Chargers’ Russell Okung to miss at least first six weeks of season

As Russell Okung recovers from a pulmonary embolism discovered this summer, the Los Angeles Chargers placed the offensive tackle on the reserve/non-football illness list Saturday, meaning Okung will miss at least the first six weeks of the season.

Okung revealed that he'd been diagnosed with the condition on July 25, more than six weeks after he visited an urgent care following "unusual chest pain" at practice. The 30-year-old missed all of training camp, and Trent Scott is listed as the first-team left tackle on the Chargers' depth chart.

Los Angeles opens its season in eight days against the Indianapolis Colts. Not only will the Chargers be minus Okung, who has protected quarterback Philip Rivers' blind side for the last two season, but running back Melvin Gordon will still be holding out in all likelihood.

Hugh Freeze working from hospital bed in coaches booth for Liberty’s game against Syracuse

Hugh Freeze will be making one of the most unique coaching debuts in college football history Saturday night. The new Liberty coach will be overseeing the team from a hospital bed that has been set up in the team's coaching booth for its game against No. 22 Syracuse.

Freeze, the former head coach at Ole Miss and Arkansas State, has been dealing with a back injury in the lead-up to the season that included a battle with a potentially life-threatening staph infection.

He was brought into the stadium via wheelchair, and Liberty had set up cameras and audio equipment so Freeze could monitor practice and communicate with coaches and players from the hospital bed.

Freeze's plan was to address the team through the video equipment before the game, at halftime and after the game, as well as use it to fulfill media obligations.

Here’s a look at Hugh Freeze’s seat in the coaches’ booth.

Freeze will essentially videoconference with his team pregame and at halftime and do so during postgame press conference.

The plan is to fly him to Louisiana next week to be with the team on the road. pic.twitter.com/YA1HAXiQ43

The visit from a ranked ACC opponent was already a huge challenge for the Flames. It will be interesting to see how the game plays out and if they rally around their injured coach.
