A former Coronation Street actress was hit by falling scenery at Shakespeare’s Globe and knocked out during a performance of Richard II.

Shobna Gulati – who played Sunita Alahan in the soap – was motionless after parts of the set struck her down.

The 52-year-old was rushed to hospital and the theatre on Bankside, south-east London, is investigating after something ‘fell out of the ceiling’.

Shobna (pictured, left, as the Duke of York) was hit by a piece of set that fell from the ceiling at the Globe theatre

Co-director Adjoa Andoh – who is also starring in the show – stopped the performance as soon as Shobna fell on Thursday, the Evening Standard reports.

The play has wowed critics and is the first adaptation of the Bard’s work comprising a cast entirely of black and minority ethnic women.

Audience member Ruth Pope told the paper that after a ‘tremendous bang’ she saw Sobna lying ‘motionless’.

She said the actress ‘seemed to have been knocked out’, adding:’ She certainly didn’t seem conscious when we left the theatre.’

The actress was reportedly knocked out during the incident on Thursday and has not yet returned to the stage

Another spectator said that those around her thought it was part of the performance until someone on stage said: ‘Is there a doctor in the house?’

Shows on Friday and Sunday were cancelled but last night Ann Ogbomo stepped in to play Shobna’s Duke of York role.
