Sheldon Silver dead at 77: Disgraced Dem politician dies in jail after being locked up for accepting $4M in bribes

DISGRACED Democratic politician Sheldon Silver dies in jail at 77, after being jailed for accepting $4million in bribes.

Silver died in a Massachusetts prison while serving a six-and-a-half-year sentence after being convicted of federal corruption charges in 2018

The disgraced politician's former chief of staff confirmed his death to the New York Post on Monday but failed to reveal a cause of death.

The New York native had a history of chronic kidney disease and cancer during his sentencing.

Silver wrote a letter to Judge Valerie Caproni to let him complete his sentence at home.

“Your honor, I do not want to die in prison,” Silver wrote to Caproni at the time.

Caproni denied his request.

Silver was initially convicted of seven corruption charges in November 2015 and sentenced to 12 years in prison the following year.

However, after his conviction, he remained free on bail as a panel of judges considered his appeal based on the US Supreme Court's decision in McDonnell vs. the United States, which reversed the corruption conviction of former Virginia governor Bob McDonnell.

The Supreme Court decision in the McDonnell case narrowed the kinds of activities that could constitute corruption, and Silver's conviction was eventually overturned by the US Court of Appeals in July 2017.

After his conviction was overturned, Silver was retried on the exact charges.

In May 2018, the former Speaker of the New York State Assembly was again found guilty on all counts.

Judge Caproni sentenced him to seven years in prison in July 2018.

Silver again appealed his conviction to the US Court of Appeals and remained free on $200,000 bail while his case was under continued appeal.

In January 2020, the panel unanimously dismissed the three charges stemming from Silver's involvement in the asbestos exposure cases.

Still, it upheld the four charges related to the kickbacks from Goldberg & Iryami and money laundering, sending the case back to Judge Caproni for resentencing.

Silver was resentenced to this time to six-and-a-half years and fined $1million.
