Serial killer ‘Volga Maniac’ strikes hacking couple to death with axe – kill count now 36
Russian police fear the sudden return of the sinister murderer after he is believed to have been inactive for seven years.
E-fits released of the latest suspect shows a chilling similarity to man known as the Volga Maniac.
He was feared to have slain up to 32 elderly people – mostly by strangling – but his last known victim was in 2012.
Four new killings however have raised fears he is active again.
He is named after the Volga river in the country, which is his usual hunting ground for victims.
“A £36,500 reward has been issued for information leading to the arrest of the maniac.”
In the latest cases, a woman, 68, and her husband, 72, were strangled and robbed in the village of Studeny, Saratov region.
Three days later a husband a wife, aged 82 and 83, were axed to death in another village of Koleno 110 miles away in the same region.
The new identikit suggest a man aged between 30 and 40 of medium build.
His picture resembles a picture circulated two years ago of the so-called Volga Maniac – one of Russia’s most wanted men.
The serial killer suspect is believed to be seen on spooky footage prowling at a pensioner’s flat in October 2016.
But since it was released there have been no further sightings of the man- until possibly now.
Police are concerned that the latest pensioner killings show the pensioner serial killer has returned although other versions are being investigated.
One potential suspect in the Studeny village has been questioned but not charged.
The Volga killer was previously active in Saratov region but also across a wide area in Samara, Chelyabinsk, Yekaterinburg, Perm, and Izhevsk.
Nine murders were in Kazan, capital of Tatarstan region, say reports.
A £36,500 reward has been issued for information leading to the arrest of the pensioner maniac.
The maniac is described as having “good communication skills, and easily enters the confidence of older people”.
