‘Selfish b*****d’ Mercedes driver brazenly takes petrol pump coronavirus gloves

A man was left outraged after a brazen Mercedes driver at the petrol pump in front of him took all the gloves that keep customers safe from coronavirus.

Steve Harrison, 54, was filling up his car at a Tesco in Walkden, Salford on Thursday when he noticed the man ahead of him had grabbed every last one of the free rubber gloves by the pump before getting back in his car.

His dashcam captured the confrontation that followed.

Mr Harrison can be seen walking up to the man's car and opening the driver's door.

The two had a brief exchange before the Mercedes driver closed his door and drove off – keeping the gloves to himself.

"I was just so shocked that he did it. It was absolutely disgusting," Mr Harrison told Kennedy News.

"He has a nice car with a private number plate. He's obviously got a few quid so he could afford them.

"But he was just a really arrogant person. He didn't care."

When he realised the next driver would be left with no means of protecting themselves from Covid-19, he knew he had to confront him.

"I opened his car door to confront him about it. I gave him every opportunity to put them back.

"I told him he'd taken each and every one of those gloves that people need to stop spreading this virus. He had them all there on the front seat.

"He wasn't bothered. He just looked at me. In the end he said 'do you want some'?

"I wasn't sure if he meant did I want some of the gloves or did I want a fight."

Mr Harrison, a self-employed food courier, had been out buying groceries with his partner Carol Cooper, 51.

He suffers from asthma himself and had been following social distancing guidelines before his altercation with the glove-hoarder.

"It was just an instant reaction. I thought 'you selfish b*****d'. We have to think of everyone else at the moment."

People have been urged to take care when touching publicly-used surfaces such as fuel pumps, and many stations are now providing gloves for customers to wear.

"One person could pass on coronavirus to 30 people from not being able to use a glove at that pump," Mr Harrison said.

"At the moment, we've all got to look after each other but this guy was only worried about himself, nobody else.

"Just don't be selfish, think of everyone else. People are dying daily from this."

The dashcam footage, which Ms Cooper uploaded to Facebook, has been viewed more than 120,000 times.
